Nov./Dec. Southwest Fly Fishing Cover Shot

I am stoked to get my first cover shot on the November/December issue of Southwest Fly Fishing. This was one of my goals for the year and I just got it in. The photo was taken on a small unnamed creek just outside of St. George, Utah. Check it out:

Like most images, this one has a story to go with it.

Upon being informed by my wife Shannon that we would be attending my niece’s high school graduation in Utah I quickly sent off an email to my buddy Corey Kruitbosch for up to date fishing information about the St. George area. Corey didn’t know much about the area but hooked me up with a “internet” friend of his named Matt who lived in the St. George area. Matt and I traded a few emails and a plan was hatched to fish below some slot canyons in the area on Saturday.

As Saturday arrived it became apparent that my wife, as well as the rest of my in-laws who were in town for the graduation, were becoming increasingly suspicious / amused by the fact that I was going to be picked up at the hotel by a guy I had never met and had only conversed with over the internet. I assured them that my “internet” friends were not serial killers and that in fact all of them thus far had be genuinely quality people. Nevertheless, when Matt pulled up in front of the hotel he was met not only by me and my fishing gear, but my wife and sister-in-law also stepped out to get a look at Matt and write down his license plate number.

Turns out Matt was a really nice guy with a wife and young daughter at home. It also turned out that Matt had an epic fishing spot that was full of colored up Bonneville Cutthroats to share, with one caveat – that I not share its location. Here are a few of the other photos:

Matt, thanks again for sharing. I will gladly repay the favor in the So Cal surf this summer.
